You all heard about resin jewelry and watched so many resin jewelry making videos, its acceptable that these resin jewelry pieces are adorable and are trending very much. Creating jewelry from different types of resin can be beneficial for small jewelers as it is an easy and inexpensive method, it doesn’t require precious metals, expensive equipment, or formal training. There is some basic knowledge required for creating resin jewelry: –
What is resin?
Resin is a chemical substance of plant or synthetic origin which solidifies when mixed with hardener and becomes very hard and crystal-clear plastic. Resin jewelry is usually made of Epoxy resin, these are thermoset plastics made by the reaction of two or more chemical compounds. Epoxy resin gives a crystal-clear appearance and a mirror-smooth surface. When creating jewelry from resin it is necessary to know which type of resin is most suitable. There are four types of resin are used to make jewelry.
Types of Resin
It is considered to be the ideal resin for the production of resin jewelry, it is a low-viscosity resin hence has a long curing time. It is crystal-clear, odorless, and non-toxic after curing and is more expensive than other resins.
Laminating resin/ Countertop Resin
It is more viscous than casting resin and is widely used for artworks. It has a fast drying time during curing. It is mostly used in resin art, i.e., paintings and its use for casting is limited. It is better for the production of embedding objects as in higher viscous fluids, objects cannot sink easily.
Its properties are very different from laminated and casting resin as it hardens quickly and has a strong odor. It is not much suitable for jewelry purposes because it gives a slightly cloudy surface after curing and is comparatively cheap to purchase.
It is named UV resin because it can cure under a UV lamp within few minutes, and gives a crystal clear surface after curing. It is odorless and can only cast very thin layers but can be suitable for jewelry making as there are usually small objects to be manufacture and due to fast curing time multi-layer casting can be done easily and also suitable for embedding objects in your jewelry.
It is the best choice of resin for jewelry making and is usually expensive than other resin due to its strength and formulation requirements. Using epoxy resin is much easier as it is easy to mix and measure, it does not require many skills and hence best for beginners.
Color Resin for Jewelry
Resins are usually colorless but there are so many coloring options available: –
Epoxy resin pigments
this type of pigment is formulated specifically for use with epoxy resin, the amount of pigment to add with epoxy resin is not specific. The best way to know is to practice with epoxy resin pigments. These dyes are used for solid, vibrant, and easy-to-mix colors.
Powdered Color Pigments
These types of dyes are used for creating the opaque and matte effect and are a budget-friendly option, it requires a super tiny amount of pigment to color a batch of resin. It can be used with epoxy as well as UV resin.
It is required to use only high-quality paints as they have higher color concentration, so these paints are relatively high in cost. Airbrush paints are used to create vividly bright pieces of jewelry. These paints are best to use with epoxy resin.
Highly-pigmented Alcohol Ink
Alcohol ink is not suitable for making jewelry as it isn’t very light-resistant and jewelry pieces are more often expose to sunlight but these pigments can create beautiful pieces which can be preserved for special occasions.
These powders can create glow-in-the-dark jewelry, jewelry pieces made from glow powders look opaque in the daytime but glow brightly in the dark. These pigments can work with all types of resin.
It is not used to color the resin but it can create sparkling jewelry and easily mixed with other coloring options. By using glitter powder, you can also create patterns and get different effects. But it is required to add a specific amount of glitter because adding too much glitter can jumble the finishing of the jewelry piece.
If you are starting to create your jewelry then creating with resin is the best option as it is an easy and less expensive method. You can create earrings, rings, pendants, bracelets, necklaces, and many more jewelry pieces using resin. Before working with resin, you should understand how resin works, its curing time, mixing ratio, etc. Also, it is necessary to take simple precautions before start working with resin.
