Saltwater pearls are usually high quality and come from oysters and mussels in oceans, seas, gulfs, and bays. Saltwater pearls are commonly used in making jewelry. These are rarer than freshwater pearls and are also more expensive. Saltwater pearls have a much larger nucleus, they are also much rounder than their freshwater counter pearls. In saltwater pearls, you can also find a wide variety of colors.
Akoya pearls are the preeminent cultured. Akoya Pearl’s scientific name is Pinctada Fucata Martensii. They are found in Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and the Persian Gulf waters. Also called composite pearls. Usually, these pearls are around 11-17 mm in diameter. Mabe pearls are used for earrings, brooches, or pins. Mabe pearls are cultured by attaching a mother-of-pearl half-sphere to a shell. Layers of nacre form on top of the half-sphere, making a dome. The nacre dome is removed, and the hole is then filled with resin and mother-of-pearl. Mabe pearls are not as durable as other types of pearls and the nacre layer may either lift off, become damaged, or sometimes discolor.
These are popular cultured pearls. Chinese freshwater pearls are nucleated with a small piece of mantle tissue from another oyster. There are more than 340 species of freshwater mussels residing in lakes, rivers, and streams. Recently, due to water pollution, several species have become extinct.
