Jewelry Product Development for US Brands: From Concept to Production

Jewelry product development is the work between an idea and a finished, repeatable product. It covers the concept, the sketch, the CAD model, the physical sample, the material and finish choice, quality checks, and the move into a production run. For a US brand, a D2C label, or a wholesale buyer, getting this stage right decides whether a design sells well or turns into returns and reorders that do not match.

The Accessory Consultant develops and manufactures jewelry for US brands from our factory in Mumbai. MOQ starts from 50 units per design. Typical CAD-to-delivery is about 18 days. NDAs are offered for private label and OEM programs. This guide walks through each step so you know what to prepare, what to approve, and where decisions get expensive to change.

What jewelry product development means

Product development is not the same as placing a production order. A production order assumes the design is final, the materials are chosen, and the finish has been approved. Product development is how you get there. It answers practical questions before money goes into a full run:

Brands that skip these questions often find the answers later, in customer reviews.

Step 1: Concept

Every program starts with a brief. The brief does not need to be polished. It needs to be clear. A useful concept brief includes:

Be honest about what is fixed and what is open. If the silhouette is fixed but the finish is open, say so. That keeps the development rounds focused.

Step 2: Sketch

A sketch turns the concept into a shape someone can build. It can be a hand drawing, a flat technical drawing, or a marked-up photo. At this stage you are deciding proportions, the overall look, and how the piece will be worn.

If you only have references, our team can work from those. If you have your own designer, send their sketches with any measurements they already know. Notes like "drop length about this long" or "should sit flat on the collarbone" help more than you might expect.

Step 3: CAD

CAD (computer-aided design) turns the sketch into a 3D model that can be manufactured. This is where most of the engineering happens. The CAD model sets:

You review renders of the CAD model and request changes before any metal is used. Changes at the CAD stage are quick compared with changes after a sample is made. Brands that already have production-ready CAD files can start here and move faster. Read more in our guide to jewelry CAD manufacturing for brand development and on the design process page.

Step 4: Sampling and prototypes

A sample is a physical piece made from the approved CAD. It is the first time you can hold the design, check the weight, try it on, and see the finish in real light. Photos and renders cannot replace this step.

When you review a sample, check:

If something is off, note it clearly and request a revised sample. The approved sample becomes the reference that production is checked against. See the sample process page for how this works.

Step 5: Materials and plating options

Material choice affects price, durability, care instructions, and how you describe the product to customers. The materials we work with are listed on our jewelry materials page:

Stone options include natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, precious stones, semi-precious stones, and artificial stones.

Finish is approved on the physical sample. If you have a finish requirement, put it in writing in your brief so it can be checked during development and production. For more on specific materials, read our guides to gold vermeil manufacturing and gold filled manufacturing.

Step 6: Quality control

Quality control starts during development, not at the end. The approved sample and the written spec give everyone the same reference. During production, pieces are checked against that reference for size, finish, stone setting, and how findings work.

To make QC useful on your side, agree on these points before production:

Clear expectations up front prevent disputes later.

Step 7: Production scale-up

Once the sample is approved, the design moves into production. MOQ starts from 50 units per design, so a new brand can test a capsule without committing to a large order. Typical CAD-to-delivery is about 18 days. International shipping time to the US is separate and is confirmed once the destination and shipping method are known.

When a design sells, reorders follow the same approved sample and spec. That is what keeps the product consistent across runs. If you plan to scale, tell us your expected reorder pattern early so the program can be planned around it. Our low MOQ guide covers how to plan a first order.

Confidentiality during development

Development means sharing unreleased designs. NDAs are offered for private label and OEM programs. Ask for one at the quote stage, before sensitive files move. Read more about private label jewelry manufacturing and OEM and ODM programs.

How to start a product development project

  1. Write a short brief with the points from Step 1.
  2. Send sketches, references, or CAD files you already have.
  3. Note your material direction and expected quantity per design.
  4. Name your delivery destination so shipping can be scoped separately.
  5. Ask for an NDA if the designs are confidential.

It is the process of turning a jewelry idea into a finished, repeatable product. It covers concept, sketch, CAD, sampling, material and finish choice, quality control, and the move into production.

Do I need CAD files to start?

No. You can start with sketches, reference photos, or a written brief. Our team builds the CAD model from those. If you already have production-ready CAD, development can move faster.

What is the minimum order after development?

MOQ starts from 50 units per design.

How long does it take from CAD to delivery?

Typical CAD-to-delivery is about 18 days. International shipping time to the US is separate and depends on the destination and shipping method.

Can you sign an NDA before I share designs?

Yes. NDAs are offered for private label and OEM programs. Ask for one at the quote stage.

Which materials can I develop in?

Solid gold, sterling silver, gold vermeil, gold filled, gold plated, and stainless steel, with natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, precious, semi-precious, and artificial stone options.
